I can’t pinpoint what actually surprised me the most about going to Winchester. It teaches you a lot of new things, it builds responsibility and a sense of push.
"The teaching here is much more tailored to the student."
My teacher would write out two pages of fully focused feedback to an essay I wrote which was just one page. Regardless of the importance of the things you want to discuss, it was always encouraged. Anything you’d want to say you put your hand up and you’d express how you feel which I think is a great way of teaching.
I never felt alienated. You just don’t see anyone as richer than another. You just see others for who they are. It’s one of the things I love about this school.
Football played a big part in my time at Winchester. One of the highlights was a house competition called Chawker Pot. We won the tournament in my last year which was huge. The house became so much more tight-knit and we were more like a family.

Within the first couple of weeks, I settled in very well and made my friends. Winchester’s definitely made me become more of my own person.
"Winchester gave me a lot of options. I don’t think I would be at the University of Edinburgh if it wasn’t for coming to Winchester and I wouldn’t have the connections I have now."
Being pushed more by your teachers and having peers who are very high achieving, makes you want to better yourself.
I did Spanish and German and both of the teachers recommended that I go on the exchanges. Obviously, that would be quite a large sum of money so my mum asked the school if they could fund it and they did. In my later years, there was a trip to India and they paid for the majority of that. We travelled to the Himalayas where we did hiking for 5 days. It was a really incredible experience.

Our son was drifting through his education at his previous school. He was not failing, but he was not being challenged to push himself further.

The number of pupils receiving bursary support is greater than you might imagine, and the anxieties about whether our son would fit in seem to be less of a concern to the boys than the parents. Either way, it hasn’t been an issue.
Winchester has enabled our son to excel academically and musically. But more than that, he has been encouraged to inquire broadly and to explore really deeply in every area of subject and interest. The real excitement is that his time at Winchester has given him the wherewithal to choose his next destination from just about anywhere he wishes.

Our Sixth Form pupils enjoy a variety of extra-curricular pursuits every afternoon, whether their passions are sport, music, drama or the arts. The range of opportunities on offer includes our flagship entrepreneurship and innovation hub, led by a team of experienced entrepreneurs. Working with leading businesses and universities such as LSE, the hub focuses on equipping pupils with the tools that will help them bring their boldest business ideas to life.

Wykeham Award
HOW THE BURSARY PROGRAMME CAN HELP YOU
The Wykeham Award is a pathway to a first class education
We do not have a preconceived idea about what a Winchester College pupil looks like, and nor should you. We were founded by a visionary who recognised the importance of education and service regardless of background. And that is what we look for – those who have the intellectual spark and curiosity to take advantage of everything the school has to offer, and the drive and determination to give something back.
"The Wykeham Award is a means-tested bursary for pupils who join us in the Sixth Form and are currently studying at a UK state secondary school."
It is available for boys and girls, and for those who would like to join us as a day pupil or boarder. It can cover up to 100% of the school fees, as well as other associated expenses.
Candidates should be confident of excellent GCSE results and those with a talent in sport, music, the arts, or have a broad range of extra-curricular interests, are particularly encouraged to apply.
