Senior pupils volunteer in nine local primary schools and two special schools in the area, providing one-to-one support in numeracy and literacy. They visit the schools on a weekly basis and assist pupils from Years 1-6, also helping with extra-curricular activities.
Local school pupils are also invited to attend numerous events at Winchester, including our annual Primary Schools Concert and Wildlife Talk, the Primary Schools Maths Challenge, Primary Schools AI Day, Primary Schools Choral Day with the Hampshire Music Service, Museum ‘Take-over’ Days, Chalk Stream project, and our annual Primary Schools Day where local schools participate in eclectic academic and extra-curricular activities such as Science or Natural History, and enjoy time with the Combined Cadet Force. Each academic year there are over 9000 pupil visits to Winchester.

Our activities, focused on primary school-age pupils include:
The school has established a partnership with the Wessex Chalk Stream and Rivers Trust to deliver environmental education to Winchester schools. Over 500 Year 5 pupils participate in our Primary Schools Rivers Project annually. The project aims to broaden pupils’ understanding of their local chalk stream, its hydrology and invertebrate life. Pupils undertake hands on fieldwork in the school’s Nature Reserve and investigate invertebrates under the microscope in the Biology lab. Each Autumn the school hosts a Primary Schools Wildlife Talk, in partnership with the Cameron Bespolka Trust, educating children about the environment and conservation work.
Senior pupils deliver a range of scientific experiments to pupils at Sparsholt Primary School in a weekly session for Year 5 and 6 pupils. The school also runs a series of science lectures, such as the ‘Really Cool Show’ demonstrating the effects of liquid nitrogen.
Year 6 pupils from All Saints Primary School spend a term working towards a theatrical production, performed in our theatre.
Year 4 pupils from All Saints Primary School receive weekly choral sessions and prepare for a public performance. Our 15 piece CS Jazz band perform regularly at local schools and we hold an annual Primary Schools Concert for 400 pupils in Year 5 and 6, with our orchestra performing an eclectic mix of contemporary and historical pieces.
The Treasury offers a range of curriculum workshops including Ancient Greece for KS2 pupils, and Chinese New Year for KS1 pupils. The Treasury hosts regular exhibitions and participates in events such as Museums Take Over Day, where Year 6 pupils create their own ‘pop up’ art show inspired by the Treasury collections. The children produce artwork and spend the day framing and hanging an exhibition, before hosting a ‘private view’ for their parents in the afternoon.
Senior pupils provide individual reading support to local pupils to support literacy, and lead a debating club at Twyford St Mary’s CofE Primary School. The Head of English also hosts a Creative Writing Club for all ages and abilities.
Senior pupils mentor Year 5 and 6 pupils in the learning of foreign languages.
In addition to providing numeracy support in local schools, Winchester runs many after-school clubs to inspire pupils and promote a love of mathematics. The Maths department also runs training sessions for primary school teachers, both independently and in collaboration with the Winchester Schools Teaching Alliance.
